My First Gen Con

We were lucky to work with a fantastic content creator, Prof Walt, during Gen Con Indy 2023. It was his first Gen Con! Here are some of his thoughts.

“My first Gen Con was this past August! How I would sum up my first experience… Overdelivered and Overspent.

It really does live up to the tagline, “The Best Four Days in Gaming™.”  I knew I would have a great time, but I don’t think I could have ever expected how much fun I’d have, how great the people were, and how unique the vendors were. When you step into the Exhibit Hall, you’re immersed in a world of all sorts of different types of gaming. There is something for everyone at Gen Con.

Looking back, it can definitely be overwhelming, but in a good way. There is a lot to see and do! I found myself going to booths multiple times throughout the weekend and finding something I didn’t see the first time. Gen Con does a great job providing maps to help you find your way around. Or you can be like me, start at one end and just start working your way over because you want to see it all (if this is the path you choose, make sure to bring comfortable shoes to walk in).

As someone whose primary focus is trading card games, being able to demo games like Battle Spirits Saga, Universus (My Hero Academia), and the then newly released Lorcana by people just as passionate about games as I am (Pokémon!), was such a great experience, I even ended up spreading my wings demoing a few non-TCG games throughout the weekend! I am still kind of kicking myself for not buying Sushi Boat…

I think my favorite thing about Gen Con goes beyond the games. The atmosphere is exhilarating. At the end of the day, you’re surrounded by people who are all there for the same reason…. gaming. Regardless of what you play, your age, your experience— there is always room for everyone at Gen Con.

My first Gen Con made me a lifer. I know that I will look forward to this event every year. I am excited to see what 2024 has in store. I can’t wait to see you there!”
