Genevieve’s Gift of Companionship

For as long as wild souls have taken to faraway lands in search of adventure and for as long as they have returned to us with their stories, they have told tales of the Red Dragon.

When needed most, she appears in a flash of crimson wings and golden scales to give advice, protection, or a gentle nudge out the door onto the path toward the unknown.

Genevieve. She is known all over the world for her signature red color. But there was a time, in a mishap involving a volatile energy potion and a wayward lightning bolt, when she turned Electric blue.

There’s nothing wrong with being blue for a while. It happens to all of us. But sometimes, it can take longer than we’d like to return to what we think our true color is.

I’ll tell you a story about Genevieve you’ve never heard before. It’s a small story, perhaps too small for most to remember, but important nonetheless.

Once, in a tiny fishing village across a great ocean, there lived a young maiden. If you asked her, she would have said there was nothing special about her, which is, of course, not true.

Her father was a fisherman known for venturing farther into the sea and bringing back larger fish than anyone else in the village. But he was getting older, and it fell to the maiden and her younger brother to take up his trade. Her brother was a fearless and gifted sailor and soon undertook weeks-long voyages into the deep sea, coming back laden with fish.

The maiden was afraid of the open ocean. She had nightmares about drifting out far enough to lose sight of the shoreline and never finding her way back.

One morning, pretending to be sick to avoid getting on her father’s boat, the maiden hid under her covers until she could see the tops of the sails disappear through her bedroom window. She slipped out of the house, snuck past the docks where her neighbors worked, and hiked to the top of her favorite seaside cliff.

She sat there, as she often did, feeling blue. She was too lost in deep feeling to notice the dragon sitting quietly next to her.

“I’ve seen you here often,” said the dragon. “And you always look sad.”

The maiden was startled but not afraid. She had always believed in magic.

“Yes,” the maiden said, sighing. She explained her situation, her fears, her disappointment in herself, and how she wished she could become more and do it faster. The dragon was a good listener.

“Maybe you’re not meant to fish in the deep sea,” said the blue dragon after a long conversation. “Maybe you’re meant to do something entirely different. Maybe you’re just getting ready.”

The maiden kissed the dragon on the snout. The dragon’s skin felt softer than she could have imagined, and from the place her lips touched, a warm lavender hue blushed across the icy blue scales and spread over the dragon’s body in blooms and swirls.

After a while, Genevieve flew away and eventually transformed into the Red Dragon once again. After a few years, the maiden learned how to ride and care for horses, becoming as successful and adventurous as anyone in her family, only on dry land.

Genevieve never forgot the maiden and visited whenever she was in the area for the rest of the maiden’s life.
